KINSEY’S GERMAN/NAZI AND RUSSIAN/COMMUNIST CONNECTIONS

MUSINGS

On December 12, 1997 , while in Germany , I called Dr. Tilman Spengler in Berlin .  Spengler authored Lenin’s Brain, in which he described Hermann Muller’s stay at the Kaiser Wilhelm Brain Institute.  Having worked for several years at the Institute Spengler crafted a story based on the historical facts of the case.  While agreeing that it was possible that children may have been victimized in that facility during Muller’s tenure, Spengler suggested that it was equally likely that the abuse took place in Moscow , where Muller was given extensive laboratory facilities.

Muller was suspected of being a Communist agent in Berlin , a spy for the Comintern[1], and the Rockefeller-funded Brain Institute was seen as a communist organization, said Spengler. Spengler, like I, was astonished to find no reference to Muller’s Storm Trooper arrest, or to the horrible events taking place in Germany during his stay in Muller’s book, Out of the Night.  Spengler noted that there were some rumors circulating about some kind of “less honorable” reason that Muller had left Russia in 1937 than that which he provided in his book.

I also sought out Dr. Peter Weingart, described by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Research Institute representative as Germany ’s “pre-eminent Holocaust scholar,”[2] to examine whether it might be possible that German children were tested by Muller for heredity-genetic purposes with “orgasm” data gathered as a satellite finding rather than as the exclusive reason for the study.  Any Muller data from Germany and Russia would have been fully available to Kinsey when Muller arrived on the IU campus to work in Kinsey’s zoology department in 1945 -- fully three years before Kinsey’s “child orgasm” experiments, gathered by a “scientist” who was “technically trained” appeared in Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.

On December 12 I also spoke with Weingart, who pointed out that there was a precedent for psychological and medical child experimentation since the early 1930s when twin studies on children were conducted in summer camps.  These tests were not known to have been harmful in any manner to the children.  Since Dauchau was already in place in 1933 Weingart averred that some such abuse was possible, although he like Spengler wondered if the child victims might have being obtained in Russia .

RE FURTHER TIES BETWEEN KINSEY AND MULLER

In his Guggenheim application Muller is seen to move from the collectivist philosophies of Columbia University (1911-1915) to the eugenics leadership of Thomas Huxley at Rice Institute in Houston (1915-1918), back to Columbia (1918-1920) graduating to an associate professorship in zoology at the University of Texas, Austin, from 1920 to 1925 and a professorship at UTA from 1925-1927.  Carl Hartman, like Muller took his Ph.D. in 1915 and became a UTA associate zoology professor from1918 - 1923 and full professor at UTA until he left in 1929.  Hartman became one of Kinsey’s closest friends, their first visit taking place in the zoology department on the UTA campus during Muller’s tenure in 1920.

Jones reports that under the recommendation of William Morton Wheeler, Kinsey’s eugenics “superman” mentor at Harvard, Kinsey visited Hartman in 1920, finding, “a table in his laboratory for Kinsey” (149).  Years later, seeking early professional approval, Kinsey asked Carl Hartman, -- “in reproductive biology” -- to review his book favorably.  Pomeroy points out that after Hartman left UTA he offered Kinsey the opportunity to replace him as head of the Zoology Department at the University of Illinois (204) on his way to serve as director of the pharmaceutical birth control company, Ortho Research Foundation in Raritan in New Jersey. (284).  Kinsey’s ties were significant enough to secure an appointment for one of Kinsey’s “students” at UTA in 1938 “a first-rate institution, where he spent the rest of his career” (p. 283).[3]

So Muller and Kinsey overlapped consistently since at least 1920 on such secretive and heated topics as eugenics, birth control and reproduction/selective breeding and sexuality, both engaged in parallel research criss-crossing parallel colleagues, which not one Kinsey biographer chooses to mention.

Vavilov offered Muller “a position as director of the genetics laboratory in his own Institute of Applied Botany in Leningrad .... [with a] considerable staff of co-workers.” Carlson, p. 190.   Muller was already, according to Carlson, “a corresponding member of the Academy of [Russian] Sciences” in February 1933, while he was still working in Berlin , contributing to the rumor that Muller was a member of the COM intern while in Germany .

In 1945 Muller joined Kinsey and four other faculty members in the zoology department at IU.  Muller was fluent in German, Kinsey had a German translator on staff while Kinsey studied German in college, knew that for even a new “toothpaste” was adopted a “famous scientist” was needed. (152).  Remember, Kinsey was very close with the American Nazi Bund organizer, Sylvester Verick, a pornographer and close comrade of Alistair Crowley, to whose lair Kinsey went on a pilgrimage in Italy just before he died.

Recent news coverage of American anatomical medical books having been based on the dissection of prisoners during World War II lend added credence to the possibility that some of the children used in Kinsey’s experiments were taken from this vulnerable population.

Kinsey’s “hike” with Clara was like his hikes with other men when he tried to put them in their place, p. 58

AS AN EXPERIMENTALIST

you learn only through experiments said Kinsey, 188;  The New Biology, filed and heredity experiments on his incest; the dribble and squirt experiments 606 to test fertility;  10 years with boys and lab work 155;  Gebhard photographed sex in soundproofed rooms at Kinsey’s and they developed it in K basement

Jones claims the films are made after the male volume.  Gebhard tells me films were made for the analysis of the boys, which means these were made prior to the 1948 Male volume.  Pomeroy does not suggest the films are after but before the male volume:

At an early point in the development of our research Kinsey began to feel certain impatience with the fact that the data we were collecting was necessarily secondhand.... not many scientists could be expected to condone it.  Few people would believe in the scientific purity of his motives.” (172).  Jones claims Dallenback filmed all of the sex scenes, but Tripp says he did the sadist films described, which suggests that this was carried out using Kinsey’s own money, some time earlier than when Dallenback was put on payroll.  Moreover, while Dallenback was on Indiana University payroll apparently post Male volume, clearly he and Tripp were paid earlier for their cinematic sex aid, at least via dribble and squirt.

Moreover, Pomeroy states, “From filming animals we were able to arrive at more definite conclusions than the films of humans had produced.  In the light of subsequent far more detailed studies, notably Ford and Beach’s Patterns of Sexual Behavior, what we concluded does not now seem so original....” 186  The copyright on Ford and Beach’s work was 1951, two years before the Female volume was published.

Jones admits that the soundproofing occurred in the offices during 1942, when Pomeroy came to work at the KI (482) to the eighty decibels range as noted elsewhere.  A second soundproofing labor occurred February 1950s when the KI got “new quarters” (673).  Gebhard, says Jones, had done much of the photography until “[s]ometime in 1948” when Kinsey found Tripp and Dallenback.  K hired Dallenback in 1949, he says to do the big screen films (605-606).   Moreover, says Pomeroy, “Kinsey began quite early to plan a program of laboratory observation similar to the one Dr. Masters and Mrs., Johnson subsequently established .... [We] were eager in the 1940’s and early 1950’s to supplement our interview studies with controlled laboratory observations” p. 118-119 An Analysis of Human Sexual Response.

And,

Ex cites Kinsey on virgin, premarital sex, 169, males should be !  170; he had no best man, no friends or family at wedding; 172;  he was expected to lead sexually, be gentle, etc; 174  big fish in little pond, all undergrad courses and grad school elsewhere; 181; he sought to politicize the youth; k influence on kids today, testament to his success.  He questioned his own kids;  211  or 241;  demanded they be in by x time, citing requirements of in women -- now they have men in dorm rooms for sex any night.

Although Kinsey had the western world believing that “male sexual levels typically ... peak ... in the late teens” with women peaking sexually in their later years meaning that, he argued, males and females were essentially sexually incompatible,[4] there were absolutely no data at all to confirm that destructive “old pseudo-scientists” tale, a myth which became malevolently harmful.

Dirty old man quote from Mrs.,

[1] Comintern: acronym for Communist International, founded (1919), by V.I. LENIN to claim Communist leadership of the world socialist movement. Its conditions for membership excluded non-Communist socialists. Its efforts to foment revolution failed, and in 1935 it began to form coalitions, or popular fronts, with bourgeois parties. The Comintern dissolved (1943) as a gesture of support for the Allied war effort. The Cominform (Communist Information Bureau) was organized (1947) by the USSR to coordinate the exchange of information between E European and some W European Communist parties, formerly a function of the Comintern. It was disbanded in 1956.  (The Concise Columbia Encyclopedia, 1991, Columbia University Press). The Third International founded at Moscow March 2. 1991 is an organization dedicated to propagating communist doctrine with the avowed purpose of producing worldwide revolution. This Comintern will unite Communist groups throughout the world.  (The People's Chronology, Henry Holt and Company, Inc. 1992).

[3] Personal telephone conversation with Cheryl Kaufman, assistant to the provost at UTA, December 19, 1997 regarding both Hartman’s tenure at UTA and Muller’s stay.  Muller, Kaufman reports is identified as taking a “leave of absence” for a Guggenheim fellowship “from 1932-1936, resigning in 1936” dying in 1967.  In answer to the question on the “leave of absence” card as to where did he go, the Muller card simply claims Muller was on a Guggenheim fellowship.  There is no mention of Germany or Russia.
